poor old lady

Poor Shania is in the hospital again.  She had a hematoma on her ear and the only fix for that is surgery.

I left her at the doctors office last night and will pick her up tomorrow with stitches and a good dose of pain medicine.  I’ll be following up with a variety of different ear drops and other mumbo jumbo.

This doctors office is full of people who just love animals.  They really pay a lot of attention to Shania and give her all kinds of love and attention.  I feel really comfortable leaving her there as I know she’ll get lots of petting and sweet talk.  She’ll be well taken care of.

Shania has the sweetest and most loving face I’ve ever seen on a dog.  She always looks at you (ie – anyone) as if you’re her favorite human to ever touch her.  She really makes you feel loved and needed.  It’ll be tough, that day when her age finally wins out.

Yuck! I hope she is okay. Our beagle is having ear issues, too (related to allergies, so not quite as complicated). She sits and digs, digs, digs at them every night until she falls asleep. She’s going to the vet tomorrow for a shot, poor thing. I try not to think about my puppies getting old someday. I hope they never will because I will not handle it well.

I’m so jealous you’re going to Interbike. It seems like everyone is but me. We had to cancel our trip because of work issues, but maybe next year if I can get a different job. Hope you have fun.

When Marji suffered paralysis late this summer, I started bawling because I thought I was going to have to put her down. I didn’t have $4,000 for doggie surgery. Well, some Prednisone tablets later, she is still a bit awkward (can’t afford to take her back to the vet yet), but walking, running, and even killing little critters. That dog is a Cujo.

She causes me a lot grief – lots of work – she can be very destructive if given the opportunity, but I do love that annoying little dog. 🙂

Andrea – Shania has chronic ear problems based on allergies. She’s had problems since well before we got her (at age 7) and has all kinds of scar tissue built up, etc.. we’re at the point where we’re just treating the external inflamation and trying to clear up the infections as best as possible .. but we’re not going to deal with the internal damage at this point ..

Di – I started crying on Monday morning when I was talking to Nick about the fact that I just can’t manage any more “heroics” for Shania. I want her to be happy and comfortable, but she’s just too old to spend the kind of money the vet would like us to 😉 I love her like crazy, no matter how much poo I have to clean up .. but, she’s already older than most labradors live to be..

And yeah (response to both above) – It’ll be truly heartbreaking when Shania finally reaches the end.. but I’m not sure how I’ll be able to deal with it when Chilli goes – we’ve had him since he was a puppy, and he is our first dog. *sigh* what a depressing topic 🙂
